I have tried enabling the commands in /etc/vim/vimoutlinerrc (removing
the leading '"', right?).  I tried explicitly :source'ing that file.
I tried adding :source directives to /etc/vim/vimrc.  Still, the only
thing that works for me is
:source /usr/share/vim/addons/syntax/vo_base.vim
once I have the file in the buffer.

I have a suspicion the file is not getting recognized as being for vo;
at least, there's no special mode displayed on the status line.  I
looked in the manual for ways to show the file type, but only found
ways to set it (aside from showing it on my status line).

Here's a trace, after restoring things to their  original state (I
think!).  If it's working for you and not for us, perhaps differences
in the setup of /etc/ or files under ~/ account for the difference.
The only thing I have in my home director is .viminfo.

Not too much, but then I don't know vim.  I do notice the filetype
commands for vo seem to be read in (several times).
/usr/share/vim/addons/syntax/vo_base.vim, which I source manually to
make it work, does not seem to be pulled in (nor anything in
addons/syntax).

When you start vim with some .otl file (it could be even empty), what did
you get from

:map<CR>

when your ~/.vimoutlinerrc contains only

ru! ftplugin/vo_checkbox.vim
ru! ftplugin/vo_hoist.vim

? Do ,,cx and ,,cb work?

It seems to me that there may be problem with VO defining these commands
using unecpected mapleader. You may have to redefine keys in
~/.vimoutlinerrc.

Hi Ross,

In /usr/share/vim/addons/ftdetect/vo_base.vim, try to change :

8<-----------------------------------------------------
if exists("did_load_filetypes")
        finish
endif
8<-----------------------------------------------------

by

8<-----------------------------------------------------
if did_filetype()
        finish
endif
8<-----------------------------------------------------

That worked for me and I am since an happy user of vimoutliner :)

good luck,

Alexandre Patry

That didn't seem to have any effect here.  Again, I'm going by whether I
see colors.

hum,

did you try ":syntax on" just to be sure.  You can also test the
outliner special commands like ",,d" in command mode to see if a date is
inserted.

good luck,

Alex

:syntax on gives me colors
,,d seems to work with or without the colors.

So my only problem is that syntax coloring is not on?  How do I make
that automatic?

By the way, I reverted the change you suggested below before trying the
moves above.

Thanks.

You do not have properly set up vim. Try to create your own ~/.vimrc (there
is an example in /usr/share/vim/vim6*/vimrc-example.vim, which could serve
as a beginning, but there are certainly much more developed ones -- let's
see ... -- for example mine :-) -- see attached).

Thanks.  That works.

I thought if I just installed the Debian packages things would be
properly set up.  Is this just a case that the default, syntax
highlighting off, is something I don't like, so I need to change it?
I seem to recall checking for the colors was one of the tests to see
if things were properly installed.

I think I just want syntax highlighting on, but here's a question for
vim experts: if I want syntax highlighting only for buffers/files that
involve vo, how do I do that?

And is there a way to check the filetype?  (something like
:showfiletype to correspond to :setfiletype).

Thanks.
Ross

Well, it IS properly set up in terms that you can use vim as a text editor.
However, Debian expects its users not to be idiots and so maintainers don't
try to second-guess them (or actually here pre-guess) on what other
embellishments they want.

I don't understand -- proof of vim being properly installed is that when you
run vim command, you get its window ... ???

Sure, just put 'syntax on' into your very own ~/.vimoutlinerrc.

Precisely.

And before anyone counters "but who would reasonably *not* want colors?"
have you ever seen a display that was totally unreadable because the
color highlighting of the text clashed horribly with the terminal
background & foreground colors (e.g. ansi colors, blue on black,
horrible contrast!)

As long as that could be read as calling me an idiot (which I am
somewhat, with respect to vim), you might have included your quotation
saying my setup was broken. :)

I meant that checking the colors was one of the tests for vo
installation.  From help section vo-test:
        Verify the following:
            Tabs indent the text
Different indent levels are different colors

At the moment, if you do a default install of vim and vim-vimoutliner on
Debian, the different colors test fails.

Thanks.  I didn't think to look at :set for show functionality :(
The good news is that :set filetype? shows vo_base as my filetype for an
otl file.  On my other system I put only :syntax on in ~/.vimrc and I
get the coloring.

Auch! No, I really did not want to mean that. It was just that there is no
way how to find out what the default configuration satisfying everybody
(yes, there are people who are using vim just for editing text! surprise,
surprise -- and such people have very different ideas about default than
Steve who is running on VO quite complicated information system, AFAIK).
So, Debian goes the simplest way -- just do nothing :-).

Just add to your installation routine one more step:

        - check for existence of 'syntax on' in ~/.vimrc
(or just run ':syntax' in vim)

It might be worth adding that to vim-vimoutliner's README.Debian.  But
since sarge is frozen anyway, maybe just add "syntax on" to the global
vimoutlinerrc, and then things will just work (tm).

(Except I suppose someone might have syntax off in their .vimrc, but
then one hopes they would know what was going on.)
