I happen to be working on Win32. Nevertheless I have a valid $HOME
directory. On multiuser systems your solution above would not allow each
user to save his/her window placements separately. (And multiuser systems
need not be corporate: it could be Daddy, Mommy, John and Jill, etc.). Your
solution above /is/ OK on single-user systems, especially those which have
no valid writable HOME directory (though even on single-user systems, it is
IMHO useful to make sure that $HOME points to a valid, writable directory
which can be regarded as containing "personal data").
