Replies lost in mailing list

Giorgos Gaganis
Hello

I have been looking at the mailing list and it seems to me that many
messages are missing. It seems that many don't pay attention and just
use reply and not reply to all so their messages don't get to the list.

Wouldn't it be usefull that the mailing list set the reply-to header of
the distributed messages to the mailing list address? I think I have
seen that happen on other lists.

Just a thought
Giorgos

Full ACK. It is rather annoying that this list behaves different than
all other lists I know. I forget to reply to all nearly every time I
answer. However, in many cases I realize my error /before/ sending the
message.

Best regards,
Georg

This was dicussed already a view times before. This message here was
very instructive:

I have read the message and the article it was pointing to.
I have to say that I agree with the author that avoiding reply-to
'munging' is "best practice".
But we have to say that it is not "common practice". This is the first
list ever I have encountered that doesn't do it. Unfortunatelly some
times "common" is more appropriate than "best".

Anyway the problem that made me start this thread still remains, that
users are not accustomed to this behaviour so many messages that should
go to the list don't and many threads don't make sense to the readers of
the list.

So if we exclude the solution of changing reply-to what are our other
options?

Personally I have no problem to remember to use reply-to all.

There are also people saying just the opposite "Reply-To Munging
Considered Useful":

Hi!

Ok. The article linked from the message is interesting. I did not think
of these negative effect, therefore I agree not to change the current
practice. For members who tend to forget that, it might help to replay
to all in all lists, since this behaves the same in all lists.

Best regards,
Georg

Almost all of my replies so far have gone to the author of the message
instead of the list. The use of reply-to header, though not the most elegant
of solutions, is by far the simplest one for most list members. I would vote
for changing the reply-to header.

Unfortunately, my mail client does not support:
nmap reply reply-all
;-)

Unfortunately, your mailer is (still) lacking a convenient way to
reply-to-list; see this[0] bug for a ~5 year discussion on implementing a
useful list-reply function.

[0]https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45715

Until a patch gets accepted by the TB devs, you will either need to manually
set your headers (as discussed elsewhere in this thread) or switch mailing
programs (unpleasant, I know).
